MARY ROSE

the Mary rose was one of 2 ships that started henry’s permanent fleet she and the Peter pomegranate.she was larger than peter pomegranate as payments records say she was 400 tonnes while Peter pomegranate was 300 tonnes.life on board Mary rose was crowded and during the battle she capsized she would have had 700 but even the peace time crew of 400 would make the ship very cramped.there were over 130 longbows and thousands of arrows found on Mary rose, suggesting that she was carrying archers.the only confirmed eyewitness account stated that the Mary rose fired all her guns on one side and was turning when a strong gust of wind made the ship capsize, she had her gunports open, possibly making it easier for the water to enter the hull of the ship causing it to flood and become unstable and sink, drowning hundreds of men in the process.only approximately 34 men survived the sinking of the Mary rose.theories of the Mary rose’s sinking are as follows:

1)human error; it could be that the crew didn’t understand orders or didn’t listen to orders given by the captain

2)the weather; it could be that a particularly strong gust of wind blew when the ship was turning causing it to capsize and sink at the battle of the solent.

3)overloading; the ship could have been overloaded when she capsized but that could be disproven because earlier in her life she carried 1000 men to France in henry’s invasion of France.but then the ship was fitted with more gunports and which would have meant more which meant more weight and it could have been possible for the Mary rose to overloads she had 700 men on board and extra guns.

4)the French;the French could have sunk the Mary rose as she was in a battle and a shot to the lower could have made her flood and sink at the battle of the solent.
